Manufacturing Optimization

Large wing center section and aft fuselage optimized and relocated reducing labor costs by 25%

As part of a broader assembly site consolidation strategy, the production and assembly of the wing center section and aft fuselage of a commercial aircraft was relocated to a new facility across regions over 1000 miles apart. The full transition project, given the scale of the structures, took 24 months to complete, during which customer deliveries continued uninterrupted and delivered quality was maintained. Once complete the labor cost of the transitioned structures were reduced by 25% through a combination of labor arbitrage and quickly re-establishing and continuing labor learning through tooling enhancements and carefully managed knowledge transfer.
